Our Dementia Care Homes

Group Homes in Sydney, NSW Neighbourhoods

Group Homes Australia understands that the current generation of Australians seek more than what traditional dementia aged care facilities, nursing homes and hospitals for their loved ones. They, and their families desire options that offer elevated levels of respect and personal care combined within a warm, friendly environment where they are welcome to visit anytime.

At GHA, we specialise in providing specialist care and meaningful and purposeful moments for people living with dementia. Our care and health services includes people living with Alzheimer’s, Vascular dementia, Lewy Body disease, Frontotemporal dementia, Young onset dementia, Parkinson’s related dementia, and Wernicke-Korsakoff Syndrome.

We also offer R&R – Respite Reimagined short stays.

What support do we provide at Group Homes Australia?

To provide ample dementia support, every group home has 2 to 3 Homemakers for every 6 to 10 residents in the home. This means 1 Homemaker for every 4 residents on average during the day.

Working in this way not only allows us to avoid using agency staff, but also means that we can form meaningful, quality relationships between our residents and homemakers.

On top of this, our Homemakers and RNs get support from a dedicated social worker. This means both residents and family members can get emotional support when they stay at Group Homes Australia.

How can I start the conversation about my loved one’s needs?

When you get in touch with us, our specialist team will help you understand how we are doing dementia differently. We also encourage you to ask any questions you might have, and lean on our team for support during this time. After touring one of our homes, your loved one will receive a unique initial assessment in the comfort of your own home. This initial assessment will help to build a relationship with the person who will be receiving dementia specific aged care, as well as to get an understanding of what makes them unique and what specialist services they will need.

Our Concept

Group Homes Australia provides dementia aged care services that are very different to your standard dementia unit or nursing home. Our social and small-scale model has been successful in many countries around the world and involves small groups of residents, from 6 to 8 people living in each home, with a high carer-to-resident ratio (averaging 1:3). While underpinned by best practice clinical care and health, our Homemakers are passionate about getting residents involved in day-to-day life activities that bring them purpose and meaning, including:

  • Cooking and baking
Like anyone, a family member receiving care has some favourite dishes or treats that they love to eat and make. Here at Group Homes Australia, we give your loved ones the opportunity to whip up some well-loved goodies in the kitchen, with assistance as needed.
  • Exercise and yoga
Personal care like yoga and other forms of exercise are so important, not only for physical health, but for mental wellbeing as well. That’s why our care team offer your loved one the opportunity to participate in any exercise they enjoy, with assistance.
  • Helping with household activities
Small chores like hanging the laundry always need to be done. People receiving dementia care or other clinical support can still do these small tasks as long as they are able to. Our Homemakers support our residents to continue to do the small household activities that they have always done, that often bring a sense of purpose. These activities can be adapted to each residents care needs, if they find these activities meaningful.
  • Gardening activities
We all know gardening has a range of benefits for us. Not only can this peaceful act support our mental health, but gardening is also a great way to get outside for some gentle physical activity. Each of our homes has a garden that our residents love to spend time in and help the plants to grow.
  • Walks around the neighbourhood

Lots of our residents love walking, and staying connected to their local communities. Our Homemakers love supporting our residents to continue to go for walks, take a trip to the shops or the local coffee shop and stay connected and active.

Group Homes is an alternative to traditional aged care facilities and dementia-specific nursing homes. We are Sydney-based, with residential care homes in the Eastern Suburbs, Northern Beaches, North Shore, Hill District, Sutherland Shire and Inner West communities, with more specialist dementia care homes coming soon to Victoria and Queensland.
