It’s up to everyone to bring about change.

Dementia Australia have released a research report named ‘Discrimination and dementia- Enough is enough’. The report has identified that 65% of people surveyed who live with dementia and 58% of those who feel at risk of dementia believe discrimination towards people living with dementia is common or very common.

We asked Founder and Executive Director of Group Homes Australia, Tamar Krebs, about the stigma and discrimination experienced by people living with dementia . . .

“We are trying to change this stigma. We understand that everyone’s dance with dementia will be different, and no one persons journey or symptoms will be the same. Understanding this can help humanise dementia and the people living with it,” says Tamar.

If you’ve met one person with dementia, you’ve met one person with dementia. Every person has unique needs and wants.  At Group Homes Australia, we believe it’s important to understand who the person is, and what brings them meaning and purpose. This can help understand how they will navigate their dance with dementia.

Group Homes Australia is supporting the Australian Carers Guide and Carers Australia campaign which is providing resources and generating awareness for family carers who are currently caring for a family member. We often hear people talking about the “stages and phases” of dementia. At Group Homes Australia we prefer to encourage families and those living with dementia to take each day as it comes. We encourage you to celebrate cherished moments and work through the challenging situations one day at a time.

We host a monthly webinar series named “Do it Differently” which asks the question of healthcare professionals – when was your last ‘aha moment’? Every month Tamar presents to busy healthcare professionals who are often multi-tasking and managing competing priorities and they also like to challenge the status quo and want to do it differently. Dementia Australia says “a little support makes a big difference” to the half a million Australians and almost 1.6 million Australian who are involved in their care. Help celebrate a carer or share tips for self-care. You can find more information by clicking here.
