Jan 1, 2014

Dementia can be a confronting and scary journey. You may be just at the beginning of the journey, questioning whether a loved one has or doesn’t have Dementia.
Over the next few weeks, I’ll share some helpful information for you and your loved ones as you walk the journey of living with Dementia.
The early signs of dementia are very subtle and vague and may not be immediately obvious. You also may not notice the symptoms all the time. If there is a spouse or a partner they may “protect “ the person with Dementia compensating for them answering questions instead of them, so that their dignity is not compromised.

Some common symptoms may include:

  • Progressive and frequent memory loss – you may experience the person with dementia asking the same question over and over. Be more likely to repeat themselves or lose the thread of their conversation, Become more forgetful of details of recent events, they may Be more irritable or upset if they fail at something
  • Apathy and withdrawal – you may find that the person gets a blank look at times. It maybe when lots of people are around and they cannot follow the conversation. with less sparkle, Lose interest in hobbies and activities either do them less or not do them at all
  • Confusion – They may not remember what day it is today or where they need to go. Be unwilling to try new things- like going out to a new restaurant may become increasingly difficult and too over stimulating.

Loss of ability to perform everyday tasks.- this may be that the person used to be a good cook and now no longer can cook and may say they don’t enjoy it anymore.

We find that the person with dementia will try and mask or “present” better then they really are.
